Welcome to Palace Gate Restaurant: A Journey Through Ghanaian Flavors

Nestled in the heart of Chicago at 4548 N Magnolia Ave, Palace Gate Restaurant stands as a culinary beacon for those eager to explore authentic Ghanaian cuisine. Renowned for its warm, homey atmosphere, this family-operated establishment invites you to indulge in the rich and diverse flavors that define Ghanaian culinary traditions.

A Taste of Tradition

At Palace Gate, diners are treated to an extensive menu that showcases the vibrant tastes of Ghana. Signature dishes include Jollof Rice with Chicken, a beloved staple bursting with spices and served with perfectly fried plantains. For something uniquely refreshing, the Waakye — rice and beans combined — features tender beef that melts in your mouth.

Highlights That Captivate

Guests often rave about the fulfilling portions and flavorful dishes. A diner named ‘a h’ recently praised the beef jollof rice as "delicious" and "ready fast," highlighting the generous serving size for just $23. Such feedback underscores Palace Gate's commitment to not only flavor but also value.

Homey Ambiance and Excellent Service

As you step inside, you'll find the restaurant exudes a comforting vibe perfect for family meals or casual dining with friends. Simply put, the genial service — often provided by the owner's daughter — makes every visit feel like a warm embrace. Customer ‘Mona’ shared how the staff's willingness to guide them through the menu made their experience memorable, despite the menu's lack of descriptions.

Noteworthy Dishes to Try

There’s something remarkable about the Kenkey with Fish, which was marked as a favorite by Mona. The starchy kenkey, paired with crispy fish and spicy shito, creates a well-rounded flavor profile reminiscent of a comforting home-cooked meal. Vegetarians will also find solace in the Red Red — bean stew accompanied by perfectly fried plantains, delectable enough to convert any non-vegetarian.

Convenient Location

Located just two blocks from the Wilson Red Line stop, Palace Gate is easily accessible for anyone traversing the city. A small shared parking lot is also available for those choosing to drive, providing ease for all visitors.

Final Thoughts

Palace Gate Restaurant is not just a dining experience; it’s a gateway to the rich cultural tapestry of Ghana through its cuisine. Whether you’re a seasoned Ghanaian food enthusiast or a curious newcomer, Palace Gate promises a culinary adventure that tantalizes the taste buds. I wholeheartedly recommend visiting this jewel of Chicago to embark on your own flavorful journey.

Overall Thoughts: This is a small, homey family restaurant serving up traditional, delicious Ghanaian dishes. There was only one other party there when we came for dinner on a Sunday. My only suggestions are around the menu... it’s pretty hard to navigate if you have no prior knowledge of or experience trying Ghanaian cuisine, as there are no descriptions or even prices on the menu. It would’ve definitely been helpful to know the prices before ordering, but the prices seemed overall reasonable when we got the receipt at the end. The server (who seemed to be the owner’s daughter) helped answer any questions we had, and the food came out pretty quick. Otherwise, the food is wonderful and bursting with flavor— would totally recommend! Food I tried: - Kenkey with Fish (4.7/5): I liked this dish best out of everything we ordered. The kenkey itself had great starchy, umami flavor, and its soft, mushy texture paired perfectly with the fish which was crispy, well-fried, and flavorful. Combined the spicy shito and onions and neutral tomato, all the flavors came together perfectly. - Beans (Red Red) with Egg and Plantains (4.5/5): There weren’t a lot of vegetarian options on the menu, but this dish was a delicious, filling option. The beans were full of flavor and the plantains were some of the best I’ve ever had— they were perfectly fried and the oil brought out their maximal sweetness and softness. - Jollof Rice with Chicken (4.6/5): This was another favorite dish. The jollof was full of spice and flavor, and comes with plantains and your choice of protein. The chicken was super tender and fell off the bone; doused in flavorful sauce, the flavors were robust and hearty. - Peanut Soup with Rice Ball (3.6/5): I wasn’t a huge fan of the peanut soup here... It wasn’t as peanut buttery as I would’ve hoped, but I recommend getting the rice ball with it, if you order this dish. It’s slightly sweet on its own, and really soaked up the flavor of the soup. - Waakye with Beef (4/5): This was pretty good and flavorful. The beef was tender and the rice and beans were flavorful. — Price (relative to peers): 4.3/5 Food: 4.4/5 Ambience: 4.3/5 Service: 4.8/5 Overall Value: 4.5/5

I thought the price per portion was the strongest I've seen in the city. The rice was very fresh and extremely flavorful. The chicken was so tender and the sauces were on point. Plantains were huge value and quality Very quickly packaged for pick up. Will be back

I love this place!! I went here with one my friends from out of town and we were blown away by how AMAZING the food was! My friend ordered the Fufu with Peanut Butter Soup and I ordered the Jollof Rice with Chicken. When I took my first bite, I was in heaven! This was our first time trying Ghanaian Food and will definitely be coming back! Service was excellent and staff was very kind. Transportation here by train was pretty close as we were 2 blocks from the Wilson Red line stop and they also have a small shared parking lot if you choose to drive here.

Anytime I am craving Ghanaian food I visit Palace Gate. One of the most authentic tasting Ghanaian Restaurants in the United States. Although I like to try different foods, I pretty much stick to the Waakye each visit. Probably because it’s one of my favorite meals and I can’t always count on Palace Gate to get it right.
